Once, while she was writing one of her love poems in the Court, she saw an old man approaching. The stranger started a conversation with her.He told Eleanor that he had known her since the queen was a little child and that he always helped her although she didn't know that. At first,Eleanor disbelieved in what the old man was saying but then she noticed something unusual - the stranger was wearing a gold cross with eight sapphires. The same cross had appeared in Eleanor's dreams several times. That made the queen curious and suspicious of the old man.She wanted to know why he hadn't introduced himself earlier if it was so.Eleanor was deeply convinced that the man was going to ask for some money or shelter but when she asked him for his aims,he only gave a faint smile and said nothing. The queen was furious.Nobody afforded not answering to her questions. That's why she pursed her lips and turned her back on the stranger. Then he started speaking again. He said that if Eleanor didn't give him the most precious thing she possessed, she wouldn't give a birth to a child from now on.The threat scared the queen. She turned to look at the man but he had gone. This misterious disappearing horrified her even more than before. All day long Eleanor thought about the unusual meeting. The stranger's words still tingled in her ears. She looked through her jewellery trying to find something really precious and unique. She verged on dispair when she found the answer to the riddle. An old man wouldn't need much money or pieces of jewellery because he knew that materials things are transient, useless. Without further delay Eleanor opened her old diary and tore out a piece of paper. She ran out in the garden, waiting for the man to come back but he didn't appear again. The next day she staid in the Court,at the same place,at the same time as the previous day.The old man came and stared at her.The queen gave him the paper and said in embarrassment : '' I hope you'll approve my decision." And she was right. Her best poem, including all dearest wishes, dreames, thoughts and hopes showed the shape of her heart. That was all she had ever wanted and in fact, everything she was inside, under the expensive dresses and jewellery. No other queen's possession was as important as Eleanor herself. The old man smiled and said : ''You are really wise and remarkable woman.Take this cross and never take it off !'' Then he went away and this time for good. Eleanor took his advice and always wore the gold cross.Soon she gave a birth to a son.As a matter of fact, she had 8 children after the unusual meeting - 5 sons and 3 daughters (as many as the sapphires on the cross). So...did it really happen or it's just a legend ? Who knows ? kaynak:bir efsane |
